Bruce Hostetler - Artistic Director Compass Works

Bruce Hostetler – Artistic Director
In his twenty-five year directing career Bruce has directed well over a hundred theatre, musical, and opera productions throughout the USA and Canada. He wrote the book and story for four operas that toured the west coast. Bruce ran several theatre companies before starting CompassWorks, including serving as a Producer for the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in Ashland, OR. When he is not leading Compass, Bruce is a free-lance stage director and is currently serving as the President of the Portland Area Theatre Alliance. He holds a Master of Fine Arts Degree in Stage and Television Directing from the Carnegie Mellon School of Drama in Pittsburgh, PA.

A few thoughts from Bruce: This interview process has been amazing. The wisdom that exists in this community is truly staggering. I couldn’t do what the people I have been talking to have done. Or perhaps I could if I needed to. That’s been one of the common threads of all my interviews: “I didn’t think this would be my life.” When you are forced to live the unimaginable, you discover you can do the impossible. I’ve really been impressed by people’s attempts to remain human, to remain valuable members of society, even when society seems to be casting them out.

A singer who enjoys experimental projects and choral music, Julie has sung with Flash Choir, Opera Theater Oregon, and Filmusik, as well as participating in original installations and works by Claudia Meza, Grouper (Liz Harris), Ethan Rose and Seth Nehil.
